Celebrating a 101st Birthday at Our Care Home in Lowestoft
At Wellbeing Care, we’re privileged to witness and celebrate the extraordinary lives of our residents every day.
This January, we marked a truly momentous occasion at The Dell, our care home in Lowestoft, as we celebrated Mabel’s 101st birthday — a remarkable woman whose life has been defined by resilience, independence, and love.
Surrounded by family, fellow residents, and our dedicated team, Mabel’s special day was one of warmth, reflection, and joy.
A Life of Service and Strength
Born on January 3rd, 1924, Mabel grew up in a time when the world faced monumental challenges.
At just 18 years old, during the height of World War II, she joined the Women’s Land Army. Encouraged by her father, who suggested she contribute to the war effort, Mabel began a life-changing chapter, serving on a farm in Kislingbury, Northamptonshire.
Her days were long and demanding, spent planting vegetables, driving tractors, and caring for the farm’s horses, which were used for ploughing the fields. Despite the hard work, Mabel fondly recalls the friendships she forged during those years and the sense of purpose her work gave her.
Looking back on her time in the Land Army, Mabel reflected that her favourite time was the early 40s. She loved being in the army and enjoyed the sense of freedom it gave her.
The experience instilled in Mabel a fierce independence that shaped her life. It also gave her a treasure trove of stories, which she loves sharing with those around her.
A Special Celebration
As we celebrated Mabel’s 101st birthday, the sense of community and love was palpable.
Her family joined us for the occasion, including her son Trevor and daughter Val, who sang alongside Mabel to one of her favourite songs, Vera Lynn’s iconic “We’ll Meet Again.”
The room was filled with laughter, music, and fond memories as we all raised a toast to Mabel. She received heartfelt cards and flowers from friends, family, and staff, and the celebrations were a true testament to the impact she’s had on everyone around her.
When asked about her secret to a long and happy life, Mabel offered some simple but profound advice: “Eat well, drink, and don’t stress”.
She also reminded us of the importance of embracing independence and making the most of life’s opportunities — values that she has carried with her throughout her remarkable life journey.
Lessons From a Century of Life
Mabel’s life is one of resilience and wisdom.
After her time in the Land Army, she married, raised three children, and continued to cherish her sense of independence. She remains a firm believer in staying active and connected, and her zest for life inspires everyone she meets.
Even at 101 years old, Mabel’s ambitions remain as vibrant as ever. She dreams of travelling more, continuing to seek out new adventures and experiences.
