In times of crisis, most of us have a way of coming back home. But what if that crisis is actually preventing you from coming back home or being with your loved ones? Not being able to be with your loved ones physically can be taxing, especially during trying times. It’s hard to feel close and connected without actually being close and connected. The challenge for everyone now is to adjust to this new normal and make a little more effort on keeping in touch without having to travel far and compromising many social distancing rules. These are some tips you can do!

Use video calls

If there's one positive we can draw from in the middle of a 2020 pandemic, it's that we can now make use of technology to help make things more convenient and allow us to do what we aren't able to do at the moment. That includes seeing people without having to travel all the way to where they're currently located when it's not safe yet. Literally showing your face on a video call (whether that’s over WhatsApp, Facetime, Facebook Messenger, Zoom, or Skype) can help to simulate that feeling of being together.

Send a care package

Let them know that you're making an effort for them. You can assemble a care package that includes these four categories: Activities and hobby items, comfort items, snacks and treats, and sentimental items. For the activities and hobby items, think of things that will stimulate their creativity and help cultivate a positive attitude. You can put in puzzles, board games, books, or knitting kits. The comfort items may include things that foster the feeling of being at home--maybe a pair of fuzzy slippers, comfy pajamas, blankets, plants, candles, and scents. As for the snacks and treats, think of their favorite food. It would even be better if it's homemade, taking into consideration their strict diet if they have any. Lastly, make this care package something truly personal by including sentimental items like photographs, letters, or drawings.

Set up a surprise virtual party

Is your loved one celebrating a birthday or a milestone soon? How about organising a surprise for that person? Gather your friends and family and have them record a special video message of greetings and encouragement for that person. After that, you can compile everything and edit it into a whole heartwarming video. This simple gesture might not be a lot but it will surely make your loved one feel extra special especially during an important day.

Update them through social media

Seeing regular photos and videos of what your loved ones are up to, or even special milestones, can really brighten anyone's day! This can help someone feel included and ensures that they don't miss out on memorable moments. Social media is a great way to conveniently update the people you care for about what you've been doing recently. Upload your latest photos and make sure to tag them so that they can easily see it. If you're a more private person and don't want to be broadcasting everything you do to the whole world, then you can simply change your posts' privacy options. Or better yet, go directly to private messages and send your pictures to your loved ones privately.

Organise virtual movie dates

A fun, entertaining movie, some good popcorn and the company of a loved one. Who doesn't like movie dates? Unfortunately, with social distancing rules in place, you can't do that as often as you can at the moment. But who's to say you can be stopped from doing movie dates with a loved one? Even if you can’t be together, you could agree to watch a movie or tv series at the same time – so you can share your reactions in real time! Ever heard of Teleparty? It's a browser extension for watching TV remotely with friends. It synchronises video playback and adds group chat to your favorite streaming sites! Too advanced for you? No worries, you can simply sync a schedule with your loved one and watch a movie at the same time and discuss your thoughts about the movie through a phone or video call. Movies provide an excellent opportunity for bonding and discussion between loved ones. In fact, it is often a great way to start talking about an issue that affects your own relationship without bringing it up directly.
