How can you deliver person-centred care effectively?



Person-centred care ensures that care recipients are treated with dignity and respect at all times; something we value highly here at Wellbeing Care.



This week, we’re looking at the different ways to deliver person-centred care:



Ways to Deliver Person Centred Care: Listen to the Care Recipient



Listening is a vital tool you can use to ensure that you’re respecting your care recipient and helping them feel validated.



Have conversations with them and ask them how they’re feeling, what they’re looking forward to, what they want - but, most importantly, listen to their answers. Take into account their thoughts and feelings and respect their wishes.



This is important in person-centred care because you can then adjust your care plan for the day accordingly. For example, they may be feeling tired, and so you can rearrange your activities and have a quieter, more restful day.

Your care recipient may have differing opinions, values, beliefs, culture, religion or preferences to you. This can sometimes lead to feelings of frustration, but it’s important to respect their views and accommodate them wherever possible.

Why Virtual Exercise Classes are Taking the World by Storm

Have you ever tried a virtual exercise class?



When the pandemic began, many people found it difficult to keep up with their exercise routines as they could no longer attend gyms or classes.



It didn’t take long, however, for people to find a way around this - and the world soon saw a significant rise in the number of people taking part in virtual exercise classes.



Try a Virtual Yoga Class

One of the many benefits of a virtual exercise class is that they’re easily accessible, and you can join in with live sessions or watch prerecorded ones. This means your exercise can fit around your personal schedule.



Yoga is great for stretching your muscles and strengthening your core - and there are many different types and levels, so you don’t need to have any prior experience with yoga to join in.

Virtual exercise classes can help you stay fit and healthy from the comfort of your own home. This is particularly beneficial if you’re feeling nervous or are a beginner.



So, if there’s an exercise you’re keen to try but haven’t had the courage to do in front of others, a virtual exercise class is the perfect way to introduce yourself to it.



Have you considered exercise with weights before? This is great for building your muscle strength, and also helps to improve your balance. You can use small weights and just do some gentle lifts to ease into it; you don’t need heavy weights for it to have a positive effect on your body and mind.



Take Part in Chair Exercises

Chair exercises are beneficial for those who’re just starting out with exercise, or for those who have limited movement.



You can follow along with a class and adapt it yourself, or find a specific class to do from your chair.



This can be stretching, leg raises, or gently pulling yourself up and down in a seated position.



These will all help to increase your movement and gradually help to build up your strength. Chair exercises are a firm favourite with our residents in our Wellbeing Care homes.

Easy Ways to Stay Healthy: The Importance of Hydration and Nutrition

Are you looking for ways to stay healthy?



Good nutrition is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and living as independently as possible in your senior years.



We celebrated Hydration and Nutrition week with our residents by looking at different ways to stay healthy, active, and hydrated during the summer months, and also at how we action this within our care homes to keep them fit and healthy.



If you’re looking to help your loved one make positive changes to their lifestyle, take a look at our top ways to stay healthy:



Discover The Magic of Movement

It’s important to keep your body moving as you get older; whether that’s through structured exercises or light, everyday activities.



Our Wellbeing Care homes have introduced specialist pedometers that track all movement, including small actions such as shoulder rolling, or even laughing.



The pedometers help our residents track their activity level and avoid a sedentary lifestyle. We’ve even created leaderboards to encourage some healthy competition amongst residents (even the board itself is situated near the rear of the building, so residents have to walk to see it!)



During the warmer months of the year, it’s healthy to try more activities outside. Our residents enjoy picking fruit for their homemade chutneys and walking outside with their ‘furry friends’ - including dogs and donkeys.



Frequent exercise helps your body stay strong and healthy, whilst improving your wellbeing, balance, and reducing the risks of various serious illnesses and diseases. By strengthening the heart, exercise can lower the risks of heart disease, as well as lowering your blood pressure and managing your cholesterol.



Improving your balance is beneficial, too, as it can help to reduce the risk of falls, meaning your loved one can remain as independent as possible.



Fun Ways to Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated is essential for your health, and there are plenty of fun ways to do so. As well as drinking plenty of water, you can also hydrate yourself with other beverages, such as smoothies and herbal teas.



At our care homes, we’ve introduced a ‘hydration trolley’ which encourages our residents to get involved in the preparation and serving of drinks throughout the day. The trolley holds an array of drinking vessels in different shapes and sizes. This helps hydrate the residents that are involved in the “magic of movement” activity, as we can then offer non-spill, or other specially adapted cups, to meet each person’s requirements. As well as drinks, we also encourage our residents to choose from our freshly prepared fruit platters, or take a shot of vitamin-packed berry blasts on the trolley. They can also pick smoothies or fruity milk straws for a fun way to rehydrate.



The drinks trolley has turned the process of hydrating into an activity itself: our residents help chop the fruit and help choose which flavour smoothies/vitamin blasts we make. This not only helps to encourage them to stay healthy, but it also gives them a confidence boost and helps them to feel involved, which is important for mental health.



This also provides our residents with a sensory experience, so everyone can get involved by testing the fruits and flavours before offering their opinion on which drinks their friends may enjoy.



Incorporating Different Food Groups into Your Diet

A nutritious diet refers to one that is carefully balanced. Including the correct proportions of each food group, as well as incorporating different varieties of each, is key to a healthy body and mind.



Slow-release carbohydrates such as wholemeal bread, rice, pasta and potatoes are a great source of energy, whilst meat and fish are excellent sources of protein. Fruits and vegetables contain a plethora of vitamins and minerals, whilst dairy products such as milk, cheese and yoghurt help to improve your bone strength. Each food group in moderation will help your body to function optimally.



Our care homes value the quality and balance of the food they serve, with 5* dining across the board. It’s important for our residents to feel involved in the planning process of their menus, so we include their ideas and opinions when creating new dishes.



Getting Your 5-a-Day and the Importance of Vitamins

Making sure you get your 5-a-day is essential for optimal health.



Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables will ensure you consume a variety of vitamins, which helps to maintain a healthy heart, bones and brain.



The consumption of fruits and vegetables is also an effective way of hydrating the body since many of them have high water content. Fresh produce such as celery, cucumber, watermelon and grapefruit are amazing for the lubrication of joints and the expulsion of toxins.



In our care homes, we often serve fruit platters for our residents to enjoy. Creating stimulating food-focused activities for residents during the summer months is important for helping them stay active, as well as keeping them hydrated.



The fresh fruit platters give them a choice of different fruit textures, colours and flavours, and they can help to cut and serve the fruit, making it a fun and interactive way to stay hydrated.

Community Care: 5 Selfless Acts to Boost Camaraderie

When was the last time you showed a random act of kindness for your community?



Community care is important for making and maintaining meaningful relationships with the people around you.



Just as you would incorporate self-care into your daily routine, it’s just as vital to incorporate community care too.



In our article, discover just a few of the selfless acts you can do to boost camaraderie and improve the lives of others:



Call a Friend



The events of 2020 helped many of us to understand the true importance of relationships and connections. Being isolated from our loved ones was a strange and difficult experience. Since lockdown restrictions have started easing, many of us have begun treasuring the time we now get to spend with our friends and family and have to come to appreciate them much more.



To help our residents better cope with the consequences of the pandemic, at our homes, we invited them to engage with their loved ones via video call and phone call.



As the world continues to return to normality, try to think about those who may still be lonely; why not give them a call? Perhaps you have an elderly relative who lives in a care home, or have a friend who lives far away; these people may be in need of more frequent contact and support. Take some time to give them a call and let them know you’re thinking of them to help raise their spirits and remind them that they’re not alone.



Check in With Your Neighbour



How many elderly neighbours do you have that are lonely and isolated? Perhaps you could take some time each week to check in on them.



Offering to pick up some shopping, help with some chores, or collect their prescriptions are great ways of boosting camaraderie and showing support in your community.



You could also create a group in your area, in which you phone/check-in on those who may be in need of some neighbourly assistance.



Volunteer in Your Community



Community care can involve volunteering your services to support others in your community, such as helping out at the local food bank.



Many families have felt the financial effects of the pandemic and are utilising the help that food banks offer. Why not get involved and help serve those in need? You’ll feel great knowing that your community care work is helping to benefit those in your area.



You could also organise a litter picking day. A fresh, clean environment will help improve the whole community and bring people together to help make it a better place. You could also take steps to help eliminate litter in the first place, by encouraging recycling in the community. The local schools may get involved with encouraging children to make posters to put up around the community to discourage people from leaving behind their waste, too.



Send a Gift



Sending a gift is a wonderful way to let someone know you’re thinking of them. This doesn’t have to be a grand gesture; it could be some hand-picked flowers for a neighbour, or a box of chocolates for someone you feel needs a pick-me-up.



You could even remain anonymous and leave a little ‘thank you’ note for someone who you feel has been a pillar of support in the community. This could be the beginning of a new community trend!



Pay it Forward



‘Paying it forward’ refers to the act of paying for the person behind you in a queue - so, when they arrive at the checkout, they are presented with an unexpected surprise.



This works well in a coffee shop; for example, if you're ordering a coffee for yourself, you can request to pay for the order behind you in addition to your own. You never know how someone’s day is going, or how they may be feeling, so a random act of kindness like this could benefit them in ways you wouldn’t expect.

Communication Aids For Dementia: 5 Ways to Improve Quality of Life

The dictionary is continuously developed with new descriptions of behaviours, and its dementia interpreters also run a networking platform where they offer advice and support, should you need it.



Install a Technology Assistant



Technology assistants and apps, such as the Alexa Care Hub, can provide your loved one with audible reminders for essential tasks such as appointments, phone calls, and taking medicine.



They can connect to smart devices within the home so, for example, your loved one could use Alexa to adjust the heating. Your loved one can also use the hub for listening to music or audiobooks, as well as assistance with everyday tasks such as cooking and creating to-do lists/shopping lists.



They’re user-friendly, making it easy for your loved one to remain as independent as possible in their own home.



Keep a Scrapbook



Scrapbooking offers a brilliant outlet for personalisation and expression. It's also a valuable tool for preserving special memories.



Bring copies of photographs of family and friends - both past and present - and help your loved one cut and glue them into a scrapbook. Don't forget to write down the names of each person and descriptions of the scene; it'll help jog your loved one's memory and provide valuable insight for future generations.



During each visit, you can add more to the scrapbook as a way of spending quality time with your loved one, as well as creating a beautiful keepsake. It's an effective way of providing stimulation, whilst also improving fine motor and cognitive skills.

We celebrated Hydration and Nutrition week with our residents by looking at different ways to stay healthy, active, and hydrated during the summer months, and also at how we action this within our care homes to keep them fit and healthy.

Discover The Magic of Movement

It’s important to keep your body moving as you get older; whether that’s through structured exercises or light, everyday activities.



Our Wellbeing Care homes have introduced specialist pedometers that track all movement, including small actions such as shoulder rolling, or even laughing.



The pedometers help our residents track their activity level and avoid a sedentary lifestyle. We’ve even created leaderboards to encourage some healthy competition amongst residents (even the board itself is situated near the rear of the building, so residents have to walk to see it!)



During the warmer months of the year, it’s healthy to try more activities outside. Our residents enjoy picking fruit for their homemade chutneys and walking outside with their ‘furry friends’ - including dogs and donkeys.



Frequent exercise helps your body stay strong and healthy, whilst improving your wellbeing, balance, and reducing the risks of various serious illnesses and diseases. By strengthening the heart, exercise can lower the risks of heart disease, as well as lowering your blood pressure and managing your cholesterol.

At our care homes, we’ve introduced a ‘hydration trolley’ which encourages our residents to get involved in the preparation and serving of drinks throughout the day. The trolley holds an array of drinking vessels in different shapes and sizes. This helps hydrate the residents that are involved in the “magic of movement” activity, as we can then offer non-spill, or other specially adapted cups, to meet each person’s requirements. As well as drinks, we also encourage our residents to choose from our freshly prepared fruit platters, or take a shot of vitamin-packed berry blasts on the trolley. They can also pick smoothies or fruity milk straws for a fun way to rehydrate.



The drinks trolley has turned the process of hydrating into an activity itself: our residents help chop the fruit and help choose which flavour smoothies/vitamin blasts we make. This not only helps to encourage them to stay healthy, but it also gives them a confidence boost and helps them to feel involved, which is important for mental health.



This also provides our residents with a sensory experience, so everyone can get involved by testing the fruits and flavours before offering their opinion on which drinks their friends may enjoy.



Incorporating Different Food Groups into Your Diet

A nutritious diet refers to one that is carefully balanced. Including the correct proportions of each food group, as well as incorporating different varieties of each, is key to a healthy body and mind.



Slow-release carbohydrates such as wholemeal bread, rice, pasta and potatoes are a great source of energy, whilst meat and fish are excellent sources of protein. Fruits and vegetables contain a plethora of vitamins and minerals, whilst dairy products such as milk, cheese and yoghurt help to improve your bone strength. Community Care: 5 Selfless Acts to Boost Camaraderie

When was the last time you showed a random act of kindness for your community?



Community care is important for making and maintaining meaningful relationships with the people around you.



Just as you would incorporate self-care into your daily routine, it’s just as vital to incorporate community care too.

The events of 2020 helped many of us to understand the true importance of relationships and connections. Being isolated from our loved ones was a strange and difficult experience. Since lockdown restrictions have started easing, many of us have begun treasuring the time we now get to spend with our friends and family and have to come to appreciate them much more.



To help our residents better cope with the consequences of the pandemic, at our homes, we invited them to engage with their loved ones via video call and phone call.



As the world continues to return to normality, try to think about those who may still be lonely; why not give them a call? Perhaps you have an elderly relative who lives in a care home, or have a friend who lives far away; these people may be in need of more frequent contact and support. Take some time to give them a call and let them know you’re thinking of them to help raise their spirits and remind them that they’re not alone.



Check in With Your Neighbour



How many elderly neighbours do you have that are lonely and isolated? Perhaps you could take some time each week to check in on them.



Offering to pick up some shopping, help with some chores, or collect their prescriptions are great ways of boosting camaraderie and showing support in your community.



You could also create a group in your area, in which you phone/check-in on those who may be in need of some neighbourly assistance.



Volunteer in Your Community



Community care can involve volunteering your services to support others in your community, such as helping out at the local food bank.

Pay it Forward



‘Paying it forward’ refers to the act of paying for the person behind you in a queue - so, when they arrive at the checkout, they are presented with an unexpected surprise.



This works well in a coffee shop; for example, if you're ordering a coffee for yourself, you can request to pay for the order behind you in addition to your own. You never know how someone’s day is going, or how they may be feeling, so a random act of kindness like this could benefit them in ways you wouldn’t expect.

They can connect to smart devices within the home so, for example, your loved one could use Alexa to adjust the heating. Your loved one can also use the hub for listening to music or audiobooks, as well as assistance with everyday tasks such as cooking and creating to-do lists/shopping lists.

Sending a gift is a wonderful way to let someone know you’re thinking of them. This doesn’t have to be a grand gesture; it could be some hand-picked flowers for a neighbour, or a box of chocolates for someone you feel needs a pick-me-up.



You could even remain anonymous and leave a little ‘thank you’ note for someone who you feel has been a pillar of support in the community. This could be the beginning of a new community trend!



Pay it Forward



‘Paying it forward’ refers to the act of paying for the person behind you in a queue - so, when they arrive at the checkout, they are presented with an unexpected surprise.



This works well in a coffee shop; for example, if you're ordering a coffee for yourself, you can request to pay for the order behind you in addition to your own. You never know how someone’s day is going, or how they may be feeling, so a random act of kindness like this could benefit them in ways you wouldn’t expect.

These can be in the form of notes or posters at each point to help them remember these vital actions. You can also put a list of important numbers on the wall by the telephone for them, as phonebooks may get misplaced.

It’s advisable to arrange home care visits for your loved one if they choose to stay in their home.



Having set times for someone to check in with them can provide peace of mind for you and your loved one, as well as ensuring a professional level of communication. This is helpful for monitoring the progression of their dementia, whilst providing an invaluable sense of companionship in your absence.



A home care assistant can pop in once a week, for a couple of hours a day, or they can live in, depending on your loved one’s needs. It’s an online service where you can translate your loved one’s behaviours, actions, noises, and body language into the dementia-specific language, so you can gain a better understanding.



The dictionary is continuously developed with new descriptions of behaviours, and its dementia interpreters also run a networking platform where they offer advice and support, should you need it.



Install a Technology Assistant



Technology assistants and apps, such as the Alexa Care Hub, can provide your loved one with audible reminders for essential tasks such as appointments, phone calls, and taking medicine.



They can connect to smart devices within the home so, for example, your loved one could use Alexa to adjust the heating. Your loved one can also use the hub for listening to music or audiobooks, as well as assistance with everyday tasks such as cooking and creating to-do lists/shopping lists.



They’re user-friendly, making it easy for your loved one to remain as independent as possible in their own home.



Keep a Scrapbook



Scrapbooking offers a brilliant outlet for personalisation and expression. It's also a valuable tool for preserving special memories.



Bring copies of photographs of family and friends - both past and present - and help your loved one cut and glue them into a scrapbook. Don't forget to write down the names of each person and descriptions of the scene; it'll help jog your loved one's memory and provide valuable insight for future generations.



During each visit, you can add more to the scrapbook as a way of spending quality time with your loved one, as well as creating a beautiful keepsake. It's an effective way of providing stimulation, whilst also improving fine motor and cognitive skills.



It can be upsetting and frustrating when your loved one begins to forget special memories, but you can use this time to record the experiences they do remember in the scrapbook.
